Restrictions by the Border Collie Club Switzerland prevent attendance at grading

If you’ve followed this blog you’ll know that we were looking forward to the grading with the Swiss Border Collie Club on 15th May. Our dog Ross (ISDS and FCI/SKG registered) has passed all the required DNA tests, x-rays and eye examinations, and is healthy and has a lovely temperament to boot. We’ve already made an appointment with a professional dog groomer so that he looks his best on the day.

However, today, two weeks before the grading, we were told that owners of stud dogs must sign a statement that they would not cover ISDS-bred bitches in future. Breeding is only allowed with Border Collie Club approved females. This seems to us to be an unfair restriction which ties the breeder unnecessarily to the Border Collie Club, and may even be unlawful. The guidelines in German are as follows: “Art. 2.2 Pflichten Inhaber eines SKG/FCI geschützten Zuchtnamens und Eigentümer/Besitzer von Deckrüden verpflichten sich insbesondere: a) nur Hunde mit FCI-anerkannten Abstammungsurkunden zu züchten und/oder zu verkaufen;…” The Border Collie Club Switzerland also stated: “Weiter darf Ihr Rüde, nach erfolgreicher Ankörung, nur Hündinnen decken, die FCI registriert sind und die Zuchtzulassungsbestimmungen des jeweiligen Landes erfüllt, in dem die Hündin angemeldet ist…Sollten Sie daher, nach erfolgreich bestandener Körung Ihres oben genannten Rüden, weiter Hunde mit nicht anerkannten FCI Papieren züchten und / oder verkaufen, hätte dies eine Sanktion zur Folge und Abkörung des genannten Rüden.” Which means that we would not be able to cover ISDS-registered bitches in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, the UK or anywhere else for that matter, otherwise there will be sanctions.

Sadly, the consequences are that we have withdrawn BaW Ross from the grading. We had some wonderful puppies from his mating with BaW Gyp, who has justed turned four years of age, and we would like to have another litter in about one to two years’ time. So the good news is, Borders at Work Ross continues to be available for ISDS-registered bitches.
